If your car uses a CAN-FD network, or you are changing to a newer vehicle, upgrading to the Autowatch Ghost 3 Immobiliser is worth it, because the Ghost 2 does not support CAN-FD and may not integrate properly with the latest platforms. If your current Ghost 2 is working well on an older CAN-based vehicle you plan to keep, it still provides protection, but the Ghost 3 adds layered engine blocking, a faster processor, lower power consumption and stronger future compatibility. Check your vehicle, then explore the Ghost Immobiliser range to find the right fit.
• CAN-FD support: The Ghost 3 is built for the high-speed CAN-FD networks used in the latest BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and other models. The Ghost 2 is not.
• Layered immobilisation: Combines digital CAN blocking, LIN bus integration and traditional analogue circuit cuts, depending on your vehicle.
• New hardware: An all-new high-speed processor with lower power consumption.
• Flexible disarming: PIN sequence via factory buttons, key-tag or smartphone.
• Remote climate still works: Smart immobilisation lets factory apps such as JLR InControl or the Ford App pre-heat or cool the car on many vehicles.
• Best for: Owners of newer vehicles, anyone changing car, and drivers who want security built to last.
The Autowatch Ghost 3 Immobiliser (also known as the Ghost III CAN-FD) is the latest generation of the Ghost Immobiliser, built on more than 15 years of Autowatch CAN vehicle security knowledge. Like the Ghost 2, it sits invisibly on your vehicle's network with no key fob to steal and no visible hardware to locate. When you switch on the ignition, the car will not drive until you enter your unique disarm sequence.
The difference is what sits underneath. The Ghost 3 has been engineered for the next wave of vehicle electronics, making it the most advanced Ghost Immobiliser Autowatch has released. You can view the full Ghost Immobiliser range at Ghost Installations.
CAN-FD stands for Controller Area Network Flexible Data-rate. It is a faster version of the CAN bus standard that lets a car's systems, from the engine control unit to the gearbox and dashboard, communicate with each other. Manufacturers are increasingly adopting it on their newest models because it moves more data in less time.
This matters for security. Older immobilisers, including the Ghost 2, do not support CAN-FD protocols. If your vehicle runs on a CAN-FD network, a standard CAN-based immobiliser may not be able to integrate with it at all. The Ghost 3 is designed specifically to support both CAN-FD and legacy CAN networks, so it works on the latest cars while remaining compatible with older platforms.
In simple terms: if your next car, or your current one, uses CAN-FD, the Ghost 2 is no longer an option and the Ghost 3 is the upgrade you need.
The Autowatch Ghost 3 Immobiliser uses a combination of immobilisation methods matched to your vehicle's architecture. This can include digital engine blocking over the CAN bus, LIN bus integration where relevant systems are controlled via LIN, and traditional analogue circuit cuts as an additional or alternative layer. Your installer chooses the most effective combination at fitting, giving resilience that single-method systems struggle to match.
An all-new high-speed processor and lower power consumption help the Ghost 3 keep pace with modern vehicle networks while placing less demand on your battery.
You can authorise driving using a custom sequence on buttons already in your car, such as steering wheel controls or door switches, a discreet key-tag, or your smartphone on compatible setups. The sequence can be changed at any time, so nobody else needs to know it.
Smart immobilisation means factory apps such as JLR InControl or the Ford App can still pre-condition your car. The engine may run for climate functions, but the vehicle cannot be driven without your disarm sequence. A small number of vehicles may not support remote climate or remote movement alongside the Ghost 3.
Hand your car to a garage or valet without revealing your code, or even that a Ghost Immobiliser is fitted. Service mode exits automatically after a set period of continuous driving (15 minutes by default) and the system rearms once the ignition is switched off.
Upgrading from a Ghost 2 to a Ghost 3 is the right move if:
• You are buying or have bought a newer vehicle that uses CAN-FD
• Your car is a high-value or high-theft-risk model and you want the latest layered protection
• You want a system built for compatibility with vehicles for years to come
• You would like the added flexibility of LIN and analogue immobilisation layers
If you are keeping an older CAN-based car and your Ghost 2 is performing well, you are still protected. However, the Ghost 3 is the stronger long-term choice, particularly if you are likely to change vehicle in the near future. Not sure which applies to you? Our team can check your make, model and year, and you can explore the Ghost Immobiliser options in the meantime.
The Ghost 3 is fitted by an Autowatch-trained approved technician who connects it invisibly to your vehicle's CAN bus networks. Installation typically takes a few hours and includes:
• Professional installation by an approved installer
• Programming of your unique disarm sequence and a full owner briefing
• Service and valet mode setup
• An emergency code in case your standard sequence stops working
• After-care support and documentation
For even stronger protection, the Ghost 3 pairs with complementary products, including an anti-tamper siren for audible deterrence, the Autowatch CANBOT locator for theft alerts, trip history and full lockdown, and Thatcham S5 or S7 GPS tracking to aid recovery if the worst happens.
Is the Ghost 3 better than the Ghost 2?
Yes. The Ghost 3 adds CAN-FD support, layered CAN, LIN and analogue immobilisation, a faster processor and lower power consumption, making it suitable for the latest vehicles.
Will a Ghost 2 work on my new car?
Not if your car uses a CAN-FD network. The Ghost 2 does not support CAN-FD, so the Ghost 3 would be required.
Can I still use my car's app with a Ghost 3 fitted?
On most vehicles, yes. Remote heating and cooling through factory apps generally continue to work, although some vehicles have limitations.
What if my vehicle is not on the compatibility list?
Autowatch's technical development engineers can work on a solution for vehicles not yet listed, so it is always worth asking.
The Autowatch Ghost 3 Immobiliser is the most advanced Ghost yet, built for today's high-speed vehicle networks and the cars of tomorrow. If you drive a newer vehicle, are changing car, or simply want the strongest protection available, upgrading from your Ghost 2 is a worthwhile investment.
